چکیده

Curve matching is a fundamental problem that occurs in many applications. In this paper, we study the problem of measuring partial similarity between curves. Specifically, given two curves, we wish to maximize the total length of subcurves that are close to each other, where closeness is measured by the Fréchet distance, a common distance measure for curves. The resulting maximal length is called the partial Fréchet similarity between the two input curves. Given two polygonal curves P and Q in IR of size m and n, respectively, we present the first exact algorithm that runs in polynomial time to compute Fδ(P, Q), the partial Fréchet similarity between P and Q, under the L1 and L∞ norms. Specifically, we formulate the problem of computing Fδ(P, Q) as a longest path problem, and solve it in O(mn(m + n) log(mn)) time, under the L1 or L∞ norm, using a “shortest-path map” type decomposition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to study this natural definition of partial curve similarity in the continuous setting (with all points in the curve considered), and present a polynomial-time exact algorithm for it.

Partial Curve Matching under the Fréchet Distance∗

Curve matching is a fundamental problem which occurs in many applications. In this paper, we extend the Fréchet distance to measure partial curve similarity, study its properties, and develop efficient algorithms to compute it. In particular, under the L1 or L∞ metrics, we present an algorithm to compute, in O(m2) time, the partial Fréchet distance between a segment and a polygonal curve of siz...

Finding a Curve in a Point Set

Let P be a polygonal curve in R of length n, and S be a point set of size k. The Curve/Point Set Matching problem consists of finding a polygonal curve Q on S such that its Fréchet distance from P is less than a given ε. In this paper, we consider this problem with the added freedom to transform the input curve P by translating it, rotating it, or applying an arbitrary affine transform. We pres...

Computing the Fréchet Gap Distance

Measuring the similarity of two polygonal curves is a fundamental computational task. Among alternatives, the Fréchet distance is one of the most well studied similarity measures. Informally, the Fréchet distance is described as the minimum leash length required for a man on one of the curves to walk a dog on the other curve continuously from the starting to the ending points. In this paper we ...

Applied Similarity Problems Using Frechet Distance

The Fréchet distance is a well-known metric to measure similarity of polygonal curves. In the first part of this thesis, we introduce a new metric called Fréchet distance with speed limits and provide efficient algorithms for computing it. The classical Fréchet distance between two curves corresponds to the maximum distance between two point objects that traverse the curves with arbitrary non-n...

Partial Matching between Surfaces Using Fréchet Distance

Computing the Fréchet distance for surfaces is a surprisingly hard problem. It has been shown that it is NP-hard to compute the Fréchet distance between many nice classes of surfaces [God98], [Buc10]. On the other hand, a polynomial time algorithm exists for computing the Fréchet distance between simple polygons [Buc06]. This was the first paper to give an algorithm for computing the Fréchet di...
